2e3. A quoted attribute value now escapes `, &, < and | as \u0060, \u0026, \u003c and \u007c, in every directive — the maintainer's pick. Emitted attributes are inert to the code span, entity reference, autolink, raw HTML and the pipe cell's split, so a table whose cell holds an attribute pipe keeps the pipe form, and escaping: 'attribute' collapsed into none.

Two false claims in spec/flavour.md fixed where found: the Tables paragraph listed an inline directive's attributes as unspellable while pinning \u007c for exactly that.
